LWV Responds to House Hearing on Non-Citizen Voting

WASHINGTON — The League of Women Voters of the United State issued the following statement following the House Administration Committees hearing “American Confidence in Elections: Preventing Noncitizen Voting and Other Foreign Interference.”  

“Make no mistake, false and misleading information about our election system is being presented by Congress in an attempt to undermine voter confidence ahead of November. This is just another attempt to spread misinformation about our democratic systems and to sow distrust in our elections.  

“It’s long been illegal for non-citizens to vote in federal elections, and there is virtually no evidence that it happens. Our elected leaders should prioritize passing legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act that would make voting more accessible for Americans, rather than bills like this which harm American voters.  

“At the League, we are dedicated to empowering voters through education about our elections, and we support pro-voter legislation that would allow all voters to participate in our democracy fully. Voters deserve an equal and fair chance to have their voices heard, and we urge our elected officials to work in a bipartisan way to pass meaningful legislation that would make voting more accessible.”
