On Thursday, July 16, the below message was sent to League leaders to
encourage action on health care reform.
Dear State and Local League Presidents,
Both the House of Representatives and the Senate are working to pass
Health Care Reform legislation in the next few months. As you
know, health care reform is a priority legislative issue for the League
of Women Voters. This is a critical time for you to engage
with elected leaders as well as the community at large on an issue that
will have long lasting implications for all of us. Included with
this letter are a number of links to items designed to offer resources
for your League to take action. We encourage you to take action
now using the following items.
The first
item is a League letter-to-the-editor. This is a good
time to raise the issue of health care reform in your community through
local media. In addition to the sample letter, there is a
step-by-step guide to best practices for getting your letter
published.
The second item
is a letter to be sent to your Representatives and Senators. The
letter calls on U.S. Senators and Representatives to take action on
health care and urges them to support comprehensive reform.
It is important that members of Congress hear from their constituents on
the need to pass comprehensive health care reform now.
The third
item is a link to background papers and Voter-ready articles
developed by the member of the Health Care Task Force.
These papers address key issues in the health care debate including a
description of public insurance plan choices, cost containment measures
and analyses of previous legislative health care campaigns.
We need to hear from you! Please report back on what you hear
from your Representatives and Senators. Contact Christina Vamvas,
Grassroots Lobbyist, at cvamvas@lwv.org or (202) 263-1328 to
update LWVUS on the results of your activities. Also, be sure to
check the League website regularly at www.lwv.org for the most up to date
information since the health care debate is constantly
evolving.
Sincerely,
Mary G.
