Democratic Activisim and Family Tradition
I joined the LWV of N. Billerica, MA
in 1970 while my mom, Dotty Conner, was President of the LWV of SLO
County, CA. My husband and I were away from home while he served
in the Air Force during the Vietnam War--of which we were not
supporters. I was 7 months pregnant and I wanted an outlet for my
political voice and activism. Mom was a delegate to the LWVUS Convention
in 1970--the same one where Hillary Rodham spoke--and she persuaded me
to attend as a delegate too. We shared a room with JoAn Rich, also of
SLO. I remember spending hours with JoAn talking about Nixon's expansion
of the war into Cambodia. I also remember speaking at a floor mike, but
about what I don't remember. We had loads of fun.
LWV is a great way to be active for
democracy, for young and old alike.
