The League of Women Voters Education Fund, with funding from the John
S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is pleased to announce the launch of
“Openness in Government: Looking for the Sunshine,” a
project to broaden public awareness about the issues involved in, and
the threats related to, openness in government. “Openness in
Government” is an outgrowth of the Local
Voices project. As part of this new project, LWVEF will award
pass-through grants to at least 10 Leagues to hold forums on this
important subject during Sunshine Week 2006. The Second National
Sunshine Week will be celebrated March 12-18, 2006. The most important
facet of Sunshine Week is reminding citizens about their rights
concerning access to government information.

| Freedom of Information Act Anniversary July 4th will mark the 43rd anniversary of passage of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which was landmark legislation that established our right to access government records and codified our right to know what our government is doing. The LWV has created a letter to the editor template to help your League mark this milestone for our democracy.
