Openness in Government

Because an open and accountable government is the cornerstone to a healthy democracy, the League of Women Voters is committed to transparency at all levels of government.  For decades, the League has helped to ensure openness in government by monitoring local government meetings; advocating for public policy that promotes transparency; educating the public about their right to know; and most recently, conducting public document audits. This section contains resources, event information, and project updates in this area. Highlights
Survey on Open Government Dialogue
The League and a number of organizations in the fields of public engagement and transparency (AmericaSpeaks, NCDD, OpenTheGovernment.org, OMB Watch and others) are collaborating to evaluate the 3-phase Open Government Dialogue so many of you participated in recently.

Citizen Initiative for Transparency: Public Documents Audit
The League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF), with funding from The Herb Block Foundation, is working on the second phase of its “Citizen Initiative for Transparency,” a project to monitor and advocate for open government at all levels. The first phase of this effort focused on open meetings, and this phase deals with open records.

2009 Sunshine Week Event
On Friday, March 20 from 1 - 2:30 PM (ET), LWVEF co-hosted the 4th Annual Sunshine Week National Dialogue. Entitled “Opening Doors: Finding the Keys to Open Government”, the event was held at the Center for American Progress in Washington DC and was available via webcast. It featured panels of experts from inside and outside government who discussed federal openness policies and opportunities for people to use government information to make a difference in their communities. Leagues are encouraged to host “viewing parties” in their local communities. Audience members will have opportunities to ask questions of the panelists, and Leagues could consider combining the webcast with a follow up panel to discuss the local aspects of the issue.
