Newspaper in Education Institute: Electing the President
LWVUS has partnered with the Newspaper in Education Institute to
publish and provide free of charge Electing the
President.
Electing the President is based on
LWVUS’ Choosing the President and other League
resources. Electing the President is available
as a 30-page letter-size PDF and a 16-page tabloid supplement for
printing in volume by Newspaper in Education (NIE) programs
nationally.
Using Electing the President, students will
learn about all aspects of elections as required by state standards.
State standards usually include:
- Explain what an election is
- Describe, explain and evaluate the election process including:
- Voter Registration
- Primary Elections & Caucuses
- Political Party Conventions
- General Elections
- The Electoral College
- Describe, analyze, and evaluate the role of the press in political
life and elections in the U.S.
- Explain the role of the media in setting the public agenda
- And many other social studies, civics, and government
standards.
Of course, voters will also learn a great deal about the election
process as they prepare to make their choice for President.
Leagues are encouraged to contact their local newspaper’s NIE
program to develop local partnerships to provide this resource to local
schools and communities. As a non-profit type activity of the newspaper,
NIE programs usually recruit a local corporate sponsor to help defray
the cost of printing the supplement and help pay for newspapers that are
used in the classroom with the supplement. Leagues may also download,
print and distribute Electing the President
without collaborating with a newspaper.
