Today, the Administration published their new proposed greenhouse gas rule for new power plants. This first-of-its-kind rule is a really important step in the fight to eliminate the ill-effects of global climate change. The League is pleased with this development and said as much in our earlier press statement.
LWVUS Board and staff will be training some 30 League leaders from 9 states in Houston, TX on Friday, April 13 until Sunday, April 15, 2012. The training will bring together individuals who have volunteered to be state coaches as part of the Membership and Leadership Development (MLD) program, funded by the Fund for Local League Growth.
It was just about a month ago that the League and partner organizations successfully petitioned The White House to appoint new commissioners to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Our petition argued that the FEC is supposed to be the agency that enforces campaign finance laws, but it is dysfunctional. Of the six commissioners at the agency, three of them staunchly refuse to enforce the law, and five of the six are serving despite expired terms. Today, we again wrote to President Obama, asking for a response.
I am sure many of you are wondering what does it mean to be the G8-BMENA NGO partner of the United States. Since the announcement of the selection of the League as the US NGO partner, I have been leading a team of three (myself included) in discussions about what our role should be.

This morning, President Obama signed the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act into law and League Executive Director Nancy Tate got the opportunity to stand with the President as he did so. The STOCK Act makes it illegal for Members of Congress to invest or trade stocks based on nonpublic information they acquire on Capitol Hill.
