Over two months ago, we began imploring you to submit comments to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in support of their proposed regulation to limit carbon pollution from new power plants.
We’ve continued to update you on the environmental community’s progress. We reached nearly a million comments within two weeks. We then surpassed a million, and last week we surpassed TWO million!
You may remember that in the middle of June, we welcomed over 800 members from across the country to Washington, DC for our national convention. The Court's decision today in a pivotal campaign finance case has repeated its naïve, uninformed errors from its Citizens United decision. The First Amendment is meant to protect essential freedoms, not as a weapon to destroy American democracy. We look forward to the day when the Supreme Court majority deals with facts rather than imposing their own ideological views.
The League was jubilant when Title IX of the Education Amendments Act was passed on June 23, 1972. Passage of this historic Act was another step forward in achieving equal opportunity for women. This simple sentence did it! “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”
Last week we told you about an attempt by Senator Jim Inhofe and a vocal minority that would have eliminated an historic regulation issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Today the U.S. Senate voted to reject that effort!
One of the remaining cases that the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide on before they recess for the summer is American Tradition Partnership vs. Bullock. The Supreme Court could decide to hear argument on this case when it returns this fall and ultimately it could cause the Supreme Court to reconsider its previous decision in Citizens United vs. FEC.
Back in March the League joined with coalition partners on a petition asking the Obama Administration to appoint new commissioners to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). The petition gathered over 27,000 signatures, over 2,000 signatures above the required threshold needed for a response from The White House.
