The League team will travel to Tunisia on July 5, landing in Doha on July 6. The workshop will begin with an opening reception on the eve of July 10 where the League and ARFORGHE will officially welcome members of civil society organizations from 18 countries in the broader Middle East and North Africa Region.
For more than six years, the League has been fighting against an Arizona law that requires voter registration applicants to provide documentary proof of their citizenship. That requirement was not only unnecessary, it also made it nearly impossible to conduct an independent voter registration drives such as the ones for which the League of Women Voters is justifiably famous. What’s more, the Arizona law clearly violated the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), which sets out the requirements for voter registration applications and does not provide for documentary proof of citizenship.
Social Studies teacher Jan Goldberg has been registering voters who turn 18 at Riverside-Brookfield High School in the Chicago (IL) suburbs for 20 years! She explains: “I use about 20 students a year to help and act as deputy registrars.” County officials come to the school to train and deputize the students.

The First Amendment is meant to protect essential freedoms, not as a weapon to destroy American democracy. The League was jubilant when Title IX of the Education Amendments Act was passed on June 23, 1972. Passage of this historic Act was another step forward in achieving equal opportunity for women. This simple sentence did it! “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”
