Margaret Hawkins Hill (Peggy) is a director for the League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) and trustee of the LWV Education Fund. A member of the League of Women Voters since 1973, Dr. Hill has served the LWV in many capacities within the state of Texas as co-chair of the Education Study and also serving on the Development Committee, Communications Committee, and Meetings and Training.

In Texas, Dr. Hill was president of the LWV in Richardson where she also received the Citizens’ Award from the Richardson Environmental Action League. In 1979, she moved to Houston (TX) where she immediately became active with the Houston League serving as chair for Election Central, a Unit leader, and subsequently holding the position of Education chair. She also served on the LWV Texas State Education Committee helping to write their Education Report from an extensive study, testifying frequently in Austin regarding the state education standards, and writing reports for the LWV Houston Area Voter.

Professionally, Dr. Hill chaired the University of Houston-Clear Lake Language and Literacy Department, was director of the Greater Houston Area Writing Project (a National Writing Project site), and held presidencies for the Texas State Reading Association and the Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading. During her tenure at University of Houston-Clear Lake she received the Piper Award for Teaching, the University Teaching and Service Awards, and was honored at the University of Houston with the Curriculum and Instruction Outstanding Alumnae Award. Honored by the Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts, Dr. Hill won the E. Farrell Lifetime Service Award. Nationally, Dr. Hill has chaired many committees for both the National Council of Teachers of English and International Reading Association. She is published widely in professional journals and has worked extensively in Guadalajara, Mexico with teachers who are building their skills to teach English as a foreign language.

Dr. Hill received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley; her Masters of Science in Reading from Houston Baptist University; and her Doctorate from University of Houston. She has been an officer and active member of professional honor organizations: Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa.
