Stories From Around the State

  • Historically, the League has worked hard for more representative redistricting, and this year is actively involved in protecting the rights of minority voters and defending the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 on several fronts.  Read this comprehensive article on voting rights in The Nation.

  • The League of Women Voters of Houston Area (LWVHA) recently hosted the 10th annual “Repast for Political Pioneers,” an event honoring local political leaders of various backgrounds and beliefs. The nonpartisan, political event recognized former Republican Harris County Clerk Beverly Kaufmann and former Democratic elected official and Party Chair Sue Schechter.

“Repast” was not only an opportunity to reflect on the past year and examine the lives of two women who offered so much to the Houston area via their political leadership, it was also an opportunity for LWVHA to raise money for the LWV Education Fund to better serve the community through their voter registration and education programs.

As local news anchor Mary Benton stated, “Hosts June Deadrick and Catherine Mosbacher did an excellent job of introducing the honorees and giving the audience a revealing look at how both women managed to balance successful political careers while maintaining strong families and loyal friendships.”

LWVHA also collaborated with PBS and KTRK Channel 13 to present the awards, with Ernie Manouse of PBS moderating the event and Miya Shay of KTRK Channel 13 opening it.

Many local elected officials and other community leaders showed up to support the League and recognize the honorees, including clerks, commissioners, council members, and local business leaders.

In the words of the LWVHA, “’Repast 2011’ was excellent, informative, relaxed, and enjoyable.”
