    WANTED: LWVUS UN ALTERNATE OBSERVER

    DESCRIPTION:

    Work with other UN and Alternate Observers to participate in areas of interest including Women in the Political Process, Climate Change & Sustainability, Women's Rights, Children's Rights, the Elderly's Rights, Preventing Violence vs Women and Girls.  Attend UN sessions and provide information to League members, represent the League at the UN and the UN at the League. 
    Time Commitment: 1-2 days per week from September thru June.

    LOCATION: UN Headquarters and surrounding area, NYC.

    UN CONFERENCE ON FIGHTING HUMAN TRAFFICKING

    The UN held a day long conference April 3, 2012 on fighting human trafficking.  Of special interest were expert panelists representing the UN, business, academia and the media.  The League's UN Observers were there and was the only NGO that was invited to make a statement, "Thank you for the opportunity to speak.  I'd like to echo the comments of Prof.

    Annual Report of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence Against Children

    Ms. Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence Against Children, has just released the 2012 Annual Report on the state of the world's efforts to eradicate violence against children.  Ms. Santos Pais and her staff are working with the League's UN Observers in a project to bring awareness of trafficking of minors during major sporting events.

    Good afternoon, good afternoon. Thank you, Melanne for that very kind introduction, and for your extraordinary leadership, in a rather short tenure, you have already improved the lives of women not just in the United States, but of course, around the world. So thank you— for everything that you do each and every day.

    I also want to thank Ambassador DiCarlo for welcoming us here today, of course my dear friend Susan Rice for her extraordinary leadership here at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations.
