The state’s highest court heard arguments on Tuesday on whether to uphold earlier rulings that voided maps drawn by Democrats as illegal gerrymanders.

ALBANY, NY - The League of Women Voters of New York State yesterday filed an amicus brief with the Appellate Division, Fourth Department in the case challenging the redistricting maps drawn by the Legislature after the Independent Redistricting Commission had failed to submit a second set of maps as required by the Constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2014.

Government watchdog groups are making a push to include ethics reform in the state budget. Governor Kathy Hochul promised to overhaul the state’s troubled ethics oversight commission, but so far, the proposal has not been agreed to by the Legislature.

On November 3rd, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case of New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v Bruen, marking one of the first times that the Supreme Court will address the scope of the 2nd amendment since 2008. Their decision will hav a significant impact on election safety. 

LWV of the United States, along with the Leagues of New York and Florida filed an amicus brief in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, a US Supreme Court case examining New York laws regulating the right of individuals to carry guns in public places.
