WASHINGTON — Today, League of Women Voters of the United States President Dr. Deborah Turner issued the following statement after the Supreme Court issued a stay of lower court decisions that limited access to the abortion drug mifepristone while the issue is heard on appeal:
"Women and those who may become pregnant deserve access to quality healthcare, including abortion and the privacy to make their own reproductive choices. Democracy depends on equal rights for all people. The League of Women Voters stands in solidarity with women and individuals who may become pregnant in the fight to protect reproductive freedom."
The Latest from the League
On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court released its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning the constitutional right to abortion. In so doing, they turned back the clock, looking almost exclusively at reproductive rights from the lens of the mid-1800s and earlier to determine whether the Constitution confers a right to abortion.
The US Supreme Court ruled in Whole Women's Health v. Jackson that abortion providers have the right to challenge a Texas law banning abortion after six weeks and deputizing private citizens to carry out the law.
LWVUS sent a letter to the President expressing the devastating impact that Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization will have when preventing and responding to gender-based violence.
