League of Women Voters Celebrates Law Day

League President Marks the Importance of Fair Courts

[YOUR TOWN] – [LEAGUE NAME] League of Women Voters President [YOUR PRESIDENT] marked the annual celebration of Law Day by recognizing the importance of fair and impartial courts to the people of [YOUR TOWN].

Law Day, May 1, is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law.  Law Day was created in 1958 by the American Bar Association and President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  The League is a long-time cooperating partner. Every year, through educational programs nationwide, Leagues and other organizations help underscore how law and the legal process have contributed to the freedoms that all Americans share.

“The rule of law depends on public trust in the courts,” said [YOUR PRESIDENT].  “Only with a judiciary that is transparent, independent, and diverse can we guarantee that all [RESIDENTS OF OUR STATE] perceive their justice system as fair and impartial.”

The 2011 Law Day theme, the legacy of John Adams, explores the historical and contemporary role of lawyers in defending the rights of the accused, and aims to renew public understanding of and appreciation for the fundamental principle of the rule of law.

The League of Women Voters has worked to promote a fair and impartial judiciary for more than ten years.  In 2009, the League of Women Voters of the United States began its current focus on the importance of ethnic, racial, and gender diversity.
