Enthusiasm Builds for Future of the League: MLD Program Trains 4 States in 4 Weeks
By: Sara SandersThis summer, the Membership and Leadership Development (MLD) program is providing training to local and state League leaders from nine states that are entering the program for the first time ever. After a wonderful financial out-pouring of support for the MLD program at the LWVUS Convention in June 2012, Cheryl, Carol, Kelly, and I (the League trainers for the MLD program) have been met with enthusiasm for the program and for the future of the League.

Voter ID Laws: Where We Stand after State Legislative Sessions
By: tobrienThe League and its allies were successful in keeping voter ID bills from passing in a number of states including Colorado, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon and Virginia. Only Kansas, Pennsylvania and Tennessee have passed voter photo ID laws that are currently in effect. In retrospect, thanks to the Leagues ongoing work, we are better off than we had anticipated when the legislative sessions began!

LEAGUE OF CEDAR RAPIDS/MARION HOSTS FORUM ON JUDICIAL RETENTION

The League of Women Voters of Cedar Rapids/Marion, Iowa, hosted a forum entitled “Judicial Retention: Who Does What and When." Panelists included former Chief Justice David Baker of the Iowa Supreme Court, now a member of the 6th Judicial District Nominating Commission for the Iowa Supreme Court and the Iowa Court of Appeals; Judge Van Zimmer, Court of Appeals; and Cedar Rapids attorney Steve Pace, who served from 2006-2011 as a member of the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Iowa Supreme Court and Iowa Court of Appeals. The goal of the forum was to help explain the sometimes unknown and misunderstood process of selecting judges in Iowa. The forum was free and open to the public.State: -

State League Coaches Leave Training Energized and Ready to Grow the League!

LWVUS to Train League Leaders to Make Big Impact This Election Year!

The training will bring together individuals who have volunteered to be state coaches as part of the Membership and Leadership Development (MLD) program, funded and provided by the LWVUS Leaders for Leadership Fund.

League of Ames Hosts Iowa Chief Justice on "Choosing and Keeping the Best Possible Judges"

The League of Women Voters of Ames hosted Chief Justice Mark Cady of the Iowa Supreme Court for a free public discussion of "Choosing and Keeping the Best Possible Judges" on Thursday, March 22, 2012, at the Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames. Justice Cady addressed the 78 people in attendance on the “fundamental concept of judicial independence” as he explained the founding fathers’ vision of the American judicial branch, emphasizing the need to insulate judges from political influence. Justice Cady focused on the process of selecting and retaining judges in the Iowa judicial system, proposed changes to this system and their possible effects, and the fallout from the 2010 retention elections.
