The League received its LWV logo trademark in January 2001. Our lawyers informed the League that it must avoid compromising the logo's trademark, i.e., variations weaken our legal ability to protect our “marks.” So, in order to protect the LWV logo as marked, we cannot approve requests to alter its appearance in ways other than prescribed in the guidelines below. Think of this LWV logo as our family identity. Use this logo to spread and reinforce that identity, and follow the usage guidelines below to protect our identity.
Integrity of the Logo: The logo itself should not be modified in any way. For example, the shape of the box should not be altered, nor should any other text or graphic (e.g., outline of a state) appear inside the box except the LWV. The LWV logo can be used alongside another logo or graphic image (e.g., on coalition materials), but it should not be combined with any other logo.
Logo Colors: The official colors of the logo are PMS 294 Blue for the square and PMS 200 Red for the slash/swoosh. (PMS stands for Pantone Matching System, a system for identifying ink colors.)
The corresponding web-safe color for the blue is #003366. If you are using a program system that allows you to specify the RGB or CYMK numbers, please use the following: RGB (0-85-150) and CYMK (100-58-0-21)*.
The corresponding web-safe color is for the red is #CC0033. If you are using a program system that allows you to specify the RGB or CYMK numbers, please use the following: RGB (190-15-52) and CYMK (18-100-83-8)*.
*Note: When specifying colors to printers / print houses, please refer them to the PMS colors and request they use the best match for the type of paper and process they are using.
Logo Typeface: It is desirable to use the League name in conjunction with the logo in order to strengthen the association between the two. Accompanying the logo, the name LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS should be printed in the same color as the box when used with the traditional logo and in the same colors as the "LWV" with the online, open logo and should be all caps. The official typeface is Baskerville, but since that is not readily available as a computer font, Times Roman is an acceptable substitute. The name of a specific local or state League may be printed either in a san serif face such as Helvetica or Arial AND horizontally spaced out or in Baskerville/Times Roman with normal spacing. For example:
LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS® O F K E N T U C K Y |
LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS ® |
Logo Trademark: When the traditional version of the logo stands alone, the logo MUST be accompanied by the ® trademark symbol on the upper right hand side of the logo. When the logo is used in conjunction with League name, the ® mark should be placed only at the end of "League of Women Voters," as shown in the example above, to indicate that both the logo and the League name are trademarked.
The open version of the logo must be used with the "League of Women Voters" name followed by the ® mark; it cannot stand alone.
ONLINE USAGE:
For use online or in electronic mail, Leagues may either use the full color "traditional" version of the logo or the new "open" version of the logo (see samples below).
The Traditional Version
The traditional box with the LWV cut-out and the red swoosh is available for all Leagues to use online or in electronic email. Since colors are not limited online, Leagues are encouraged to use the official colors when displaying the logo online to further increases branding. However, if in some situations, a single color or reverse variation may be used online. Please check with the LWVUS communications team for additional information.
The "Open" Version
A new version of the League logo was created for use online in conjunction with the re-launch of the LWV.org website in December 2011. This variation of the League logo was designed to convey an openness and freshness while maintaining a connection to the trademarked traditional version of the League's logo. This version is available for online use ONLY and in two variations - standard colors and reverse. Until the logo is registered as a standalone, it MUST be used with the "League of Women Voters" name followed by the ® mark.
HTML HINTS:
- To make the registered mark (®) appear after Voters, use the following HTML: ®
- The corresponding web-safe color for the blue is #003366. If you are using a program system that allows you to specify the RGB or CYMK numbers, please use the following: RGB (0-85-150) and CYMK (100-58-0-21)*.
- The corresponding web-safe color is for the red is #CC0033. If you are using a program system that allows you to specify the RGB or CYMK numbers, please use the following: RGB (190-15-52) and CYMK (18-100-83-8)*.
PRINT USAGE:
Only the traditional version of the logo may be used in printed materials.
In 4-color or full-color printing, either the full color logo in PMS 294 Blue for the square and PMS 200 Red for the slash or the reverse variation MUST be used.
The reverse variation can only be used when the background color the logo will be placed on is dark and provides little or no contrast with the dark blue box of the traditional logo. In these situations the reverse variation, which consists of a white box and a slash/swoosh that is 25% of the background color. See example below.
Example: See sample 3 under reverse usage below.
In 1-color or 2-color printing, you will use the single color or "1C" version of the logo. There is no restriction on the specific colors to be used. However, the following TWO RESTRICTIONS do apply:
- STANDARD USAGE - When the League logo is placed on a background color that is either white or the lighter of the two colors used in printing, the color of the logo will be the darker color. In the most common usage, the box would be the 100 percent of darker color and the “slash” or "swoosh" would be 25 percent of that color. Please see the sample image below:
- REVERSE USAGE - The logo may be used in reverse on a solid, colored background. In this reverse use, the box would be a specified percentage based on the background color; the letters “LWV” would be in the solid background color, and the slash would be a specified percentage based on the background color. This is also allowed for one-color use where the color is not black.
