    Empowering Women Politically to Eradicate Poverty

    The League of Women Voters is sponsoring a workshop during the 56th meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) that will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from Monday, February 27 to Friday, March 9, 2012.  The workshop is a side event organized to address the main theme of the meeting "The Empowerment of Rural Women and their Role in Poverty and Hunger Eradication."

    A Report from the Ligue des electrices tunnisienes (LET)

    On Monday, January 23, 2012, Houda Zaibi, Vice President of the Ligue des electrices tunnisienes (LET) spoke to staff and members of the League of Women Voters of the United states about the recent elections in Tunisia and about the work being carried out by the members of LET.

    Houda explained that LET was the first civil society organization in Tunisia to be credited as an official election observer by the Tunisia’s election commission, the Instance Supérieure Indépendante pour les Élections (ISIE).

    PEOPLE TO PEOPLE TRAVEL TO CUBA IN 2012

    In the spirit of cooperation with women groups in Cuba, the League of Women Voters of Education Fund and the League of Women Voters of Florida are sponsoring "People to People" trips to Cuba to enable League members to learn about the country’s history, culture and social structure, and forge relationships with civic organizations and academicians at the University of Havana. The League certifies that the trips are in compliance with the license granted by the U.S.

    International Conference on Women's Leadership in Belgrade, Serbia

    The Conference will gather leading women leaders from Serbia, the United States and South East Europe from academia, politics, business, science, and civil society.  The goal of the conference is to create an effective network of women leaders.  The Conference is being organized by the Serbian-American Women's Leadership Network with the support of the President of the National Parliament of Serbia, Ms. Slavica Djukic Dejanovic.

    UN's Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development

    Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, "Rio+20," will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from June 20-22, 2012.  The conference will be preceded by the third Preparatory Committee meeeting of the Conference from June 13-15.  Registration is now open and will close on May 20.  All attendees must be registered by the UN Observers, Rosalee Keech (unobserver@lwv.org).  For information on the conference, please link to http://www.uncsd2012.org/registration.

    THE AMERICAS

    The League of Women Voters’ work in Latin America began in 1922.  At that time, the League expanded its fight for women’s rights by convening a Pan American Conference in Baltimore, MD and extending an invitation to twenty-two delegates from Latin American nations. During the subsequent decades League volunteers have worked with emerging civic leaders in Latin America to share resources and skills in grassroots organization and activism.
