The League of Women Voters and its partners Espaço Mulher and Fundación Mujeres por Colombia just concluded the Legislative Fellows Program (LFP) that over the course of two years involved 22 fellows from Colombia and Brazil; 15 fellows and 21 mentors from the United States, 20 hosting families and 24 hosting coordinators in 12 cities.
The League of Women Voters’ work in Latin America began in 1922. At that time, the League expanded its fight for women’s rights by convening a Pan American Conference in Baltimore, MD and extending an invitation to twenty-two delegates from Latin American nations. During the subsequent decades League volunteers have worked with emerging civic leaders in Latin America to share resources and skills in grassroots organization and activism.

Failure to act on the New START treaty this year would undermine the country’s national security interests, as both our military leadership and numerous former Republican officials have noted.
The League and its coalition partners submitted joint testimony to members of the Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Law in support of the Convention for the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Treaty.
Following the success of President Obama’s Forum with Young African Leaders in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 2010, the League of Women Voters was invited by the U.S. Embassy in Antananarivo, Madagascar, to Madagascar in September to lead a series of dialogues and workshops with 32 young leaders.
League President Elisabeth MacNamara sent a letter to the Senate urging them to ratify the START Treaty which was signed by President Obama and President Medeyev in April 2010. Lobby Corps members are visiting key Senate offices this month in support of ratification of the START Treaty.

On August 27, 2010, American Councils in Baku organized a round table discussion and reception to bring together Open World Leadership Center (OWLC) alumni hosted by the League of Women Voters.
