Advocacy 101 Workshop materials

At LWVUS National Convention, a workshop was held to guide local and state Leagues in their advocacy efforts. The workshop was held in order to give delegates a broad overview of advocacy and lobbying activities. Delegates were provided with a who, what, where, when, why from LWVUS Advocacy Staff, LWVUS Board Member Judy Davis and National Advocacy Chair, Judy Duffy.

Like Facebook, Twitter is a great way to engage with the public and our members. But it is also a good way to interact with the media, key opinion leaders and our organizational partners. Through your Twitter feed, you can share all of the wonderful work you are doing, elevate the work of other Leagues who are on Twitter, and form relationships with others working on the same issues as the League. Twitter should be viewed as a tool to help you engage with your supporters where they are.

Like Facebook, Twitter is a great way to engage with the public and our members. And, it is a good way to interact with the media, key opinion leaders and our organizational partners. Twitter differs from Facebook in some important ways, most notably, the length of posts and the continuous flow of information. It is important to understand how quickly Twitter moves. Unlike Facebook, tweets are not weighted based on interactions; they stream in real time, and can be pushed down a user’s feed quickly. Twitter’s hallmark is that posts are limited to 140 characters.

Through a Facebook page, you can engage the public to becoming more involved with your League, and move them up the ladder of engagement. In addition to engaging new fans, more and more of our traditional membership is also tuning in to social media channels, like Facebook (US News & World Report, 8/2011).

LWVUS Comments on Proposed EPA Carbon Rule

LWVUS sent the following letter to the EPA in support of Carbon Pollution Standard for New Power Plants and commends the EPA for taking this crucial first step to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from large power plants that are built in the future.

Privatization Position

Background

The LWVUS Board approved a new position on Privatization at its June 2012 meeting. The position is based on responses received from the 227 Leagues across the country that participated in the Privatization Study. Thanks to the many local and state Leagues and ILOs that held meetings, involved their communities, and worked to reach consensus on this important issue. Committee Chair Janis McMillen (KS) and her Committee: Diane DiIanni (TN), Carole Garrison (VA), Ann Henkener (OH), Cathy Lazarus (CA), Nora Leech (WA), Muriel Strand (CA) and Ted Volskay (SC) are to be commended for their excellent work and leadership.
