Sample Op Ed

Have you seen a few political campaign ads recently?  OK, so you’ve seen lot.  Here in [locality], political advertisements are flooding our television airwaves.  It is hard not to see a campaign ad when watching television.

Many of these campaign ads are being run by “outside groups” that are supposedly independent from the candidates.  These ads threaten to spread misinformation and studies have shown they contain a higher level of both attacks and inaccurate statements than candidate campaign ads.

The Problem and the Project

The League’s Truth in Campaign Advertising project seeks to encourage and support local television stations as they exercise their responsibility to ensure the campaign ads they run are accurate, to reject those that are not, and, as part of their service to their communities, on the station’s news segments to provide viewers with nonpartisan, objective analysis of the political ads being run on their station. And help the public become critical/sophisticated/knowledgeable viewers of the ads that are on the air.

League Comments on Bureau of Land Management's Proposed Fracking Regulation

LWVUS sent comments to the Bureau of Land Management regarding a proposed rule that would regulate hydraulic fracturing on public land and Indian land. The rule would provide disclosure to the public of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing on public land and Indian land, strengthen regulations related to well-bore integrity, and address issues related to flowback water.

Presidential General Election Voters’ Guide

In collaboration with some wonderful League volunteers from Maryland, LWVEF has again asked the candidates running for President to provide answers to some of the most pressing public policy questions. Those candidates that meet LWVEF’s criteria have been invited to participate in this activity. Thanks to input from League members across the country we have also included a question specifically designed for low literacy publications for the first time. The LWVEF Board is happy to have again undertaken this crucial voters' service project.
