Last week, I finally reached the end of the road – or road trip – in Minnesota. Wrapping up an eight-state election 2012 tour in Minnesota was fitting as the state League is still engaged in an all-out campaign to defeat a confusing proposal to amend the state constitution. The proposed amendment, if passed, would require restrictive voter photo ID.
Flying from Miami to Milwaukee in October presents some challenges when it comes to packing, and while I certainly noticed the drop in temperature, my welcome to Wisconsin could not have been warmer! It is a true pleasure to meet with so many committed League volunteers as I crisscross the country this fall.
It was a quick trip to Florida, but an important one – I was there for the last two days of voter registration in the state. A court decision rejecting efforts by politicians to limit organizations like the League from registering voters unleashed a flurry of activity over the summer. Due to the strict new voter registration rules, the Leagues in Florida did not hold voter registration drive, therefore there was a lot of ground to make up when they began registering again.
I’m hitting four states in the next two weeks, and I started this swing close to home in North Carolina. Then I visit Florida, Wisconsin, and Minnesota before a quick respite and then I head out again. Since my travels are now in full swing, I recently shared some of my overarching insights over on my Huffington Post blog.
My election season travel is truly in full swing. I’ve been on the road for nearly a month, visiting Ohio, Colorado, Missouri, and now Michigan, and after a few quick days back home in Georgia, I’m hitting the road again visiting a few more states before the Election Day.
After visiting Leagues and elected officials in Colorado, I hopped a plane for a few quick days in Kansas City, Missouri. It was a pretty busy few days meeting with local election officials, League members, local media, and empowering high school students!
At the end of last week, refreshed from a few short days at home in Georgia, I hit the road again this time on a two state swing starting in Colorado and wrapping up in Missouri. In Colorado, I continued to meet with our partner organizations, meet our on-the-ground members and volunteers doing everything they can to get their communities ready for the November elections, and had the opportunity to meet with the Colorado Secretary of State.
Last week, I started my Election season travels with a trip to Ohio! After getting to Columbus late Wednesday night, my first full day in Ohio got off to a great start with a radio interview on Ohio public radio on the challenges voters will face during this election because of all the attempts by Ohio politicians to manipulate election laws for their own gain.
