State-Level Documentary Proof of Citizenship Laws Threaten Voters (Blog)

Across the country, state lawmakers are introducing bills that would require documentary proof of citizenship, or DPOC, to register to vote or request a ballot. These proposals would force voters to provide physical documents, such as a passport, birth certificate, or naturalization papers, before registering. These requirements are attempting to solve a problem that doesn’t exist while creating real barriers for eligible voters.

Missouri Court Permanently Strikes Down Unconstitutional Restrictions Criminalizing Voter Engagement Efforts  (Press Release)

Jefferson City, Mo. - A Cole County Circuit Court judge issued a permanent injunction against four provisions of Missouri House Bill 1878 that criminalized voter engagement efforts and chilled the freedom of speech of organizations whose priorities are to register and educate voters. The challenge was brought by the League of Women Voters of Missouri and the Missouri State Conference of the NAACP, who are represented by the ACLU of Missouri, Campaign Legal Center, and the Missouri Voter Protection Coalition.
