Forty-seven years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the historic Voting Rights Act (VRA) into law. But, the law is not just history; it remains critical to ensuring that every American can cast a ballot and have it counted. Even as we celebrate the VRA, unnecessary and costly new state voting laws remind us that voter suppression and intimidation tactics continue to plague our nation.

Congress, please take a good look at anti-voter laws

This morning the House Committee on the Judiciary will hold a hearing examining the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) record on voting rights enforcement. Protecting voters’ rights is at the core of what the League of Women Voters does so we have to ask: Why is the Judiciary committee holding this hearing rather than taking on the anti-voter laws that were hastily passed in so many states around the country?

Win for voters in Georgia this week

This week brought good news for Georgia voters. A U.S. District Judge cleared the way for a lawsuit by voting rights groups to go forward. The suit asks the court to mandate that the State of Georgia fully comply with the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) particularly with respect to providing voter registration forms at public assistance agencies both in person and online.
