Now that most state legislatures are out of session for the year the battle against voter ID moves from the statehouse to the courts. The League and its allies were successful in keeping voter ID bills from passing in a number of states including Colorado, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon and Virginia.
Our President, Elisabeth MacNamara, returned to Politics Nation with Al Sharpton as a guest on Monday evening. She was joined by the Supervisor of Elections of Leon County, FL. They spoke about voter suppression and the efforts to purge the voter rolls in Florida.
Last night, the faux-news show The Daily Show took on Florida’s new voter registration law. Among those interviewed by correspondent, John Oliver, was Deirdre McNab, president of the League of Women Voters of Florida. In the segment, Oliver investigates exactly what kind of trouble a voter registration form could get into if it isn’t turned into the State within the new 48-hour requirement.
The right to vote is under attack in too many states across the country. We believe every eligible citizen should be able to register to vote and every voter should be able to cast a ballot. The Voter Empowerment Act (VEA), introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday, takes important steps to protect voters. Earlier this week, the three federal judges tasked with reviewing Texas’ voter identification law issued an order scolding the state for its activities in “delaying the Defendants’ ability to receive and analyze the data and documents in a timely fashion.”
