Communications Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The League of Women Voters of the United States seeks a Communications Specialist to support internal and external communications priorities of the organization.  

This position is a key member of the Communications team, reporting to the Senior Communications Manager and working with the team to grow communications capacity in the field, build and achieve our message goals, and support organizational priorities.  

Ideal candidates will have experience working with membership organizations as well as experience working closely with volunteers. 

Candidates for this job will have strong writing and/or design skills, work well independently on deadlines, and also think collaboratively in a team setting.  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Draft messaging for LWVUS communications to the field, including emails and web content 

  • Develop digital graphics and images for League use, including building LWV’s Flickr library 

  • Track media coverage via daily news clips and compile highlights for staff 

  • Ensure brand compliance across Leagues and update and create League logos as needed 

  • Provide communications support for LWV interest groups in the areas of health care, climate, immigration, and money in politics 

  • Draft communications tools and templates including talking points, one-pagers, press releases, letters to the editor, sample social media posts, communications trainings, and email copy on key League impact issues 

  • Research and write content for website, infographics, blogs, and newsletters 

  • Respond to communications questions from League members 

  • Adhere to and edit content using LWVUS style guide 

  • Contribute to LWV’s internal-facing website for League resources 

  • Communicate between departments to maintain consistency of message 

  • Support national priorities of LWVUS communications team 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • 2 – 3 years of communications experience, prefer nonprofit and advocacy work or membership organization 

  • Strong writing, editing, and design skills 

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail  

  • Strong commitment to customer service 

  • Ability to work quickly under pressure, meet deadlines, and adapt to a fast pace and changing environment 

  • Ability to work independently and manage individual projects, but also function well as a team player 

  • Commitment to the League’s mission, as well as our nonpartisan and diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, and a passion for voting rights 

SALARY:  

The salary range for this position is $50,000 - $55,000  

 REQUIREMENTS:  

  • High school diploma 

  • Background in strategic communications, particularly with nonprofit, political and/or issue campaign experience desired 

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) / Office 365 experience preferred 

  • Experience managing social media and websites, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube 

  • Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva experience preferred 

  • Experience working with email software including Salsa Labs preferred
