Stories from Around the State

In a groundbreaking year, you rallied, donated, wrote representatives, and voted to defend a democracy in which all voters can safely and fairly make their voices heard.

Here are a few highlights.

Individual voter challenges occur when a person’s eligibility to vote is questioned. Across the country, ithey have been a vehicle for race- and language-based discrimination, election confusion, and voter suppression.

What does it mean when a state goes into a runoff election? We break it down.

Lawrenceville, GA – Today the League of Women Voters of Georgia along with other voting rights advocates, notified the Georgia Secretary of State and Gwinnett County that the county has been in violation of state and federal law by illegally sustaining pre-election challenges to the eligibility of registered voters. The League, the Georgia State Conference of the NAACP, Gwinnett County Branch of the NAACP, GALEO Latino Community Development Fund, Inc., Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda, Inc., and Common Cause sent the notice letter as a prerequisite to filing a lawsuit under the NVRA.

ATLANTA TODAY The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Southern Coalition for Social Justice (SCSJ), ACLU of Georgia, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (Lawyer’s Committee), and Schulte, Roth & Zabel LLP (SRZ) filed litigation challenging the Cobb County School Board map for intentionally discriminating against communities of color, particularly Black and Latinx voters, by “packing” them into a small number of districts to dilute their voting power.

With the new year comes more litigation. In the past year, the League has continued our work of fighting against anti-voter bills and purges, challenges to new district maps, and pushing back against the increased attacks on reproductive rights. Here are a handful of the issues you may want to keep an eye on in 2022.
