Public Pressures President to End Family Separations
Washington, DC - The League of Women Voters president Chris Carson issued a statement following President Trump’s Executive Order.
“At first glance, it appears that the President is working to end the current practice of separating families at our borders. The League looks forward to continuing to review the entire executive order to assess the full impact. We are hopeful that this is a step in the right direction toward protecting and reuniting families at our borders.
Make no mistake, this crisis is long from being solved. There is still a tremendous amount of work to be done to reunite these families and ensure their health and safety.
“This week the U.S. House is scheduled to vote on two pieces of legislation that address Dreamers and border security.
“The League is opposed to these highly partisan pieces of legislation and we believe they are bad for America. Immigration policies should promote reunification of families and we encourage Congress to pass the bipartisan Dream Act."
The League sent a memo to all House members highlighting the inability of the legislation’s provisions to advance our country’s immigration system, protect dreamers and preserve families. Last week, the League of Women Voters activated our Lobby Corps and grassroots supporters around this issue and we will continue to stay engaged to influence the outcome of the pending legislation. We are grateful for the tireless work of so many activists and advocacy groups on this issue around the country who we will continue to support in this effort.
