Supreme Court Strikes Down Restrictive Abortion Law in Louisiana

WASHINGTON – The League of Women Voters of the United States board president Dr. Deborah Ann Turner issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court 5-4 decision in June Medical Services v. Russo: 

“We commend the Court on today’s ruling and celebrate that Louisiana will retain the three existing clinics in the state that provide abortion care. In striking down the unconstitutional law, the Court is protecting women, especially women of color who are simultaneously grappling with COVID, police brutality, racist violence, and voter suppression.  

"Unfortunately, this isn’t the only deceptive law designed to curb abortion access that disproportionately impacts Black and brown communities. Abortion is an essential, time-sensitive health care procedure with overwhelming public support, and yet anti-choice opponents continue their attempts to limit access to this and other reproductive health care services. 

“The League of Women Voters believes every woman deserves the access and the privacy to make her own reproductive choices, and we will continue the fight for reproductive justice. We commend the Court on today’s decision and look forward to supporting future efforts that protect a women’s right to choose.”

It’s been seven months since Roe v. Wade was overturned, escalating debate over reproductive rights.

Women’s reproductive rights has been a back-and-forth conversation for decades, but some groups want to make sure the conversation keeps moving forward and that women are listening.

A panel of health experts spoke to Freeport residents in an event sponsored by the League of Women Voters. They say the goal Tuesday night was to educate people, especially women, on their bodies and the rights they have to protect them.

LWVUS Urges the US Department of Health and Human Services to Allow DACA Recipients to Enroll in Health Insurance Programs
