Leagues across the country can expect to have a busy 2016 legislative session, with the majority of state legislatures beginning their sessions in January. Voters' rights and election laws will be brought to the forefront once again in 2016, and with elections at every level of government, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
The League believes that access to the vote is about equality, not politics. Fortunately, Leagues across the country are fighting discriminatory voter ID bills – and succeeding!
In celebration of the 24th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), here are just a few ways the League works to ensure equal access to the ballot for Americans with disabilities.
"We are glad that, by upholding voting rights, the judge ruled on the side of the people of Pennsylvania," said the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania (LWVPA), the lead organizational plaintiff in the lawsuit.
"Florida Governor Rick Scott ordered his top elections official on Wednesday to figure out what caused long lines at polling stations and delays in ballot counting in the battleground state on Election Day."
"A week after Florida's electoral system melted down, there is growing consensus that the state must reform its election laws to avoid similar problems in the future. ... Yesterday, Pennsylvania Judge Robert Simpson issued a temporary injunction, halting the state’s photo voter ID law and removing an unnecessary barrier to voting.
