The League of Women Voters joined an amicus brief in the case of Zubik v. Burwell, a challenge to the contraception accommodation in the Affordable Care Act.

The League of Women Voters of the United States, alongside its Alabama, Georgia and Kansas affiliates, filed a federal lawsuit against the executive director of the Election Assistance Commission to prevent these states from requiring documentary proof-of-citizenship when registering voters using the federal mail voter registration form.

Wittman v. Personhuballah is scheduled to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court on March 21, 2016 and covers the topic of racial gerrymandering in Virginia.

The U.S. Supreme Court temporarily put the Obama Administration's ‪‎Clean Power Plan. The League has been working to push the Obama Administration to develop and implement this historic regulation for years and we will continue to work to ensure that the it is implemented properly in every state. ‪

In addition to lobbying the 114th Congress in support of our priorities, the League is working on a number of important policy proposals put forth by the President and agencies of the federal government. We will also be participating in litigation that could have a major impact on laws and regulations.

Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court considered the issue of racial equality in education in the case of Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin. The League joined an amicus brief concerning civil rights and equal access to education.

Evenwel v. Abbott, a case out of Texas, has the potential to upset the criteria for drawing state and local legislative districts so that they would be determined by the total number of voters instead of total population. The League submitted an amicus brief in Evenwel that supports the current practice of drawing district lines.

The League of Women Voters joined an amicus brief filed by the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the Southern Poverty Law Center and 16 other organizations concerned about civil rights and equal access to education in the rehearing of Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, a reconsideration of an identical case the Court heard just two years ago. The brief argues supports the University of Texas admissions policy as necessary in order for students to receive the vast and critical benefits associated with diverse campus environments. The League has a long standing position in support of access to public education that provides equal opportunity for all. We have fought since our inception to ensure that every citizen can fully and productively participate in American society, from the school room to the ballot box.

We've been lobbying to make sure the healthcare exchanges required by the ACA comply with the National Voter Registration Act. This week, we asked the president for voluntary compliance. 

"This is an important voting rights issue that can no longer be ignored," said League President Elisabeth MacNamara.
