LWV Idaho and BABE VOTE filed a lawsuit in Idaho state court against HB 124 and HB 340, which banned using student ID in voting and voter registration at polling places, respectively

NEWARK – In an amicus curiae brief filed today, the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and Campaign Legal Center – on behalf of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, Salvation and Social Justice, New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice, New Jersey Policy Perspective, AAPI New Jersey, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund and Asian American Advancing Justice | AAJC (collectively, “Amici”) – asked the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit to affirm the district court’s ruling in the case of Kim v. Hanlon.

States across the South are passing new restrictions on how votes are cast. Civil rights activists say it will reduce turnout among Black voters.

Late yesterday, the League of Women Voters of Michigan filed a motion to intervene in Republican National Committee v. Benson, a lawsuit seeking to compel more aggressive purges of Michigan’s voter rolls based on unsubstantiated and flawed data. The League, represented by the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, argues that plaintiffs seek to apply an unreasonable standard for voter list maintenance, and that eligible voters will likely be removed from the rolls if the state complies with plaintiffs’ request.

The Alabama State Conference of the NAACP, the League of Women Voters, and other groups are plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed in federal court. They say the statute disenfranchises voters, including senior citizens and disabled voters, who may need assistance in the absentee voting process.

NEWARK — In a resounding victory for democracy in New Jersey today, the Court in Kim v. Hanlon, a case challenging New Jersey’s use of the unconstitutional and discriminatory county line on its primary ballots, granted plaintiffs’ motion for a preliminary injunction – barring use of the county line on New Jersey’s ballots in the June primary election.

Crystal Mason is a Black Texas resident who was unaware she was ineligible to vote while on supervised release and was sentenced to five years in prison for voting in the 2016 election.
