Fighting Voter Suppression

“Voter advocates have urged state lawmakers not to make any changes to Ohio's election law before November, including repealing the new law. "Why rush to repeal a bill that is not in effect?" Peg Rosenfield of Ohio's League of Women Voters asked the committee.”

“Setting the stage on a national level for this year’s elections, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on April 17 ruled that part of voter registration provisions of Arizona’s Proposition 200 violate the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA)...”

Washington, DC (April 17, 2012) – The following is a statement by Elisabeth MacNamara, national President of the League of Women Voters:

“‘It's enough already,’ said Carrie Davis, executive director of the League of Women Voters of Ohio. ‘This constant round of election changes in the midst of a presidential election cycle causes too much confusion. They need to stop.’”

“Voter identification laws and other changes to polling are not expected to happen overnight, but before the changes are made, town clerks would like to have a say. ... State Rep. Anne M. Gobi...has filed legislation seeking to create a task force of representatives from the state House of Representatives and Senate, the Town and City Clerks Associations, the Massachusetts Municipal Association, the League of Women’s Voters of Massachusetts,...to look at proposed election changes and make a report to the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Election Laws.”

“Now that Photo ID is headed to the ballot, opponents are organizing to defeat it. A host of organizations, including the Minnesota AFL-CIO, the League of Women Voters-Minnesota and AARP were joined by other.. groups in announcing a campaign of ‘truth-telling’ to convince voters to defeat it.”

Ellen Mork, co-president of the League of Women Voters of the St. Cloud Area [MN], responds to voter photo ID concerns.

“Joan Ashwell, election law specialist for the League of Women Voters of New Hampshire, said the voter ID bill ‘discriminates against certain otherwise qualified voters.’”

“The nonpartisan League of Women Voters agrees with several points in the editorial. LWV also can find no proof of voter fraud which photo ID would prevent and is concerned Texas's suit poses risks for the Voting Rights Act.”

“Last spring, Florida made some changes to its election law. Cloaked as technical tweaks, the new laws have the potential to swing the 2012 election.”
