2022 – 2024 LWVUS Nominating Committee Process Summary

Team: LWVUS Nominating Committee is made up of five elected and appointed members, with the CEO serving as an ex officio, non-voting member, per LWVUS Bylaws.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE

The Nominating Committee worked in tandem with LWVUS staff leadership to understand the organizational needs while remaining independent of the Board of Directors.

Priority: During this term, the Nominating Committee prioritized the continuation of LWV’s Transformation Journey by working through both a nonpartisan and a DEI lens. The Committee continues to be dedicated to applicant confidentiality throughout the process.

Deliverable: The Nominating Committee’s task is to develop two slates of candidates for delegate consideration at the 2024 LWVUS National Convention: a 12-person Board of Directors slate and a three-person Nominating Committee slate.

Pre-Application Phase & Marketing

The Nominating Committee was committed to understanding the needs of the organization by:

  • Participation at LWVUS 2023 Council
  • Reviewing LWVUS Transformation Journey and Theory of Change; and
  • Holding meetings with the CEO and Board President.

The Nominating Committee attended DEI/Implicit Bias training. See a resource at the Management Center. The Nominating Committee agreed consensus would be the preferred and first mode of decision-making. The Committee updated the job descriptions and application questions.

The Nominating Committee reached out directly to several leadership groups, including Council attendees, state presidents, regional leaders, LWVUS Board, Framing the Future committee, former Shur Fellows, who were all encouraged by other members to apply, and past LWVUS leaders.

The Committee worked with the LWVUS communications team to send several emails directly to members, encouraging them to consider applying or encouraging a fellow member to apply. The application information was also included for three months in the League Update email. The Nominating Committee hosted two live webinars to further explain the roles and answer questions. The Nominating Committee also extended the application deadline an additional three days.

Application & Interview Phase

For the Board of Directors positions, the Committee received 67 applications. For the Nominating Committee positions, 11 applications were received.

Each Nominating Committee member reviewed and scored all applications independently, using an agreed-upon rubric based on the job description.

The Nominating Committee reached consensus on the applicant pools to interview. Interviews took place from December 2023 to early February 2024, completing 36 interviews total.

Selection Phase

The Nominating Committee came together in person to make the final decision for the slate of Board of Directors nominees and the slate of Nominating Committee nominees for approval by the LWVUS Delegates at the 2024 National Convention. The slate selection was in place by March 2024 and announced April 2024.

Future Leadership

The Nominating Committee encourages all those who applied and were not successful this time to reapply. We also encourage all members to consider taking on a bigger role in the League's future.

There are multiple opportunities for League members to actively participate in our movement, including on the national level. Examples include: serving on board and convention committees, UN Observers, LWVUS Lobby Corps, task forces, and working groups.
