UPDATE: Celebrate #GivingTuesday by making a tax-deductible donation to the League now.
We’ve been blogging a lot recently on the League’s participation in the #GivingTuesday movement, a national day of giving taking place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, December 3rd. In honor of #GivingTuesday, we’re taking some time to reflect on the hard work of League leaders in communities across the country. We’re particularly proud of all that our hardworking volunteers and their partners did to make democracy work in 2013.
So far, we’ve shared snapshots of the work we’ve done to defend the environment and keep big money out of politics. Now, we’re taking a look at our work to protect, engage and empower Americans of all backgrounds to exercise their right to vote:
- We worked nonstop to increase voter participation! Throughout the year, Leagues across the country registered tens of thousands of new voters at naturalization ceremonies, baseball games, high schools, colleges and more! In September, nearly 300 state and local Leagues were part of the over 800 organizations that helped register nearly 58,000 voters and counting for the second annual National Voter Registration Day.
- As Election Day approached, we hit the streets with posters, billboards and media outreach to remind voters that even though 2013 wasn’t a presidential election year, it was as crucial as ever to vote. But we did more than just energize voters to head to the polls – we made sure that they had everything they needed to vote! Through VOTE411.org, our nationwide online voter education resource, we connected over 300,000 voters with local candidate and ballot information, registration deadlines, voting requirements, polling place details and more.
- Across the country, state and local Leagues organized candidate debates and forums. These events, which we featured on VOTE411.org, helped interested voters learn more about the elections and ballot issues in their communities and helped them prepare to take control of their community’s future when at the ballot box.
The League believes that voter participation is the foundation of our democracy. With 1 in 4 Americans not registered to vote and nearly 25 percent of registered voters not making it to the polls for major elections, it’s crucial that we work hard to educate and engage new voters. By connecting people with the information they need to vote, the League helps to strengthen our democracy and ensure that Americans have a say in the issues that impact their lives and communities. In 2014, we’re committed to stepping up our work to register more new voters, hold more candidate forums, provide more ballot information and help all eligible voters participate in our electoral process.
#GivingTuesday is propelled by those who believe that individual action can make a difference. On December 3rd, we ask that you think of the League as you reflect on the need to strengthen our democracy and protect and engage voters.
