Today, the League marks the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States. For decades, the League has championed Roe v. Wade, both for upholding the right of individuals to make their own reproductive choices and the constitutional right to privacy. According to a Pew Research Center poll released last week, the majority of Americans align with the League’s position and strongly support the Supreme Court’s decision.
The League’s support for Roe v. Wade is just one part of our many efforts to protect reproductive rights. Over the years, we have spoken out on countless legislative attempts to limit the ruling and restrict a woman’s right to choose. As recently as 2008 and 2009, the League successfully helped defeat “conscience” regulations that would have enabled healthcare providers to limit the reproductive health services they offered women based on the providers’ personal beliefs. And in 2012, the League helped thwart the Blunt Amendment, which sought to block insurance coverage of contraceptives to women under the Affordable Care Act.
The League has a long-standing interest in legislation that provides access to healthcare for all residents of the United States. That is why today, we honor the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and celebrate its protection of reproductive rights and individual privacy.
