UPDATE – Judges Scold Texas over Delays in Voter ID Case

Earlier this week, the three federal judges tasked with reviewing Texas’ voter identification law issued an order scolding the state for its activities in “delaying the Defendants’ ability to receive and analyze the data and documents in a timely fashion.”

The League of Women Voters of Texas has joined with other groups in the state to block the implementation of this law. The challenge has been met with resistance from the state, and the court order this week notes that the state has failed to share key documents with the Defendants, including the League, in a timely manner so that they could prepare their defense.

In its order, the court has outlined conditions that the state must meet in order for the scheduled hearing to take place on July 9.

Texas is just one state where Leagues have gone to the courts to stop new voter suppression laws. Cases are also pending in South Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
