Voter Registration - There’s Still Time!

Blog / Last Updated:

Tonight is the first 2012 presidential debate, and the media has whipped itself into a frenzy over the latest poll numbers. The pre-Election rush has officially arrived. Here at the League, that means working overtime for these last critical days to make sure as many voters as possible are registered and ready to participate.

Last Tuesday, September 25, the League joined more than a thousand national, regional, and local organizations in signing on to National Voter Registration Day. This single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts aimed to create widespread awareness of voter registration opportunities and upcoming deadlines.

As part of this national celebration, at least 249 Leagues from 44 states participated by hosting registration events at schools, grocery stores, libraries, farmers markets, bus stops and more. So far, League volunteers have reported registering nearly 8,000 new voters, and counting, on National Voter Registration Day. The League’s work was featured in dozens of local news stories. Nationally, the Day received social media attention from hundreds of prominent leaders, celebrities and the public. Overall, nearly 300,000 new voters are reported to have registered or updated their registration on National Voter Registration Day and this number is still growing. All we can say is, wow!

While National Voter Registration Day has passed, our work is nowhere near done. Millions more eligible voters still have a chance to participate in Election 2012 – but only if they register or update their registration in time. In some states registration deadlines are less than one week away.

Please make sure you know your state’s voter registration deadline - it’s easy to check on www.VOTE411.org – and use what time you have left to send along the information to your friends, family, and colleagues who may still need to register.

Getting registered is easy, and it’s a must for anyone who wants to weigh in during this, one of the most important elections of our lifetime. We vote for our families, for our communities, and for our country. Thank you for your help!
