Senior Accountant


The League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS, the League) is a nonpartisan political organization that has fought for nearly 100 years to improve American systems of government and impact public policies through citizen education, advocacy, and litigation. The enduring vitality and resonance of the League as a trusted force for change and good government comes from its unique decentralized structure: a national organization with strong partnerships at the grassroots level with more than 760 state and local Leagues across the country including the District of Columbia. At the national level, League activities are coordinated and staffed by two distinct but complementary organizations: The League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) and the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF).

Position Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance and Administration, the Senior Accountant is responsible for the preparation, review and ongoing analysis of all financial information pertaining to LWVUS and the Education Fund. The Senior Accountant also assists with the coordination and preparation of the annual budget for LWVUS and the Education Fund. This person will also prepare special accounting studies, reports, and other financial analyses as projects arise.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare accurate, timely financial statements in accordance with the League’s established schedule and with input from the rest of the accounting department

  • Conduct monthly account reconciliations to ensure accurate reporting and ledger maintenance

  • Oversee the preparation of the bi-weekly payroll

  • Analyze financial statements for discrepancies and other issues that should be brought to the Senior Director of Finance and Administration's attention

  • Review all inter-company transactions and generate transfer sheets as necessary

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that will result in sound fiscal management, strong internal controls and effective management of organization assets

  • Assist the Senior Director of Finance and Administration and Senior Operations Manager with the preparation of the annual budget

  • Work with staff to ensure projections are reflective of past trends and incorporate any new data

  • Prepare special accounting studies, analyses, and statistical reports

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required

  • 3-5 years of finance or accounting experience required

  • 2 years of experience in an accounting/finance role with 501(c)(4) and/or 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations

  • Strong quantitative skills and excellent attention to detail

  • Strong working knowledge of Excel

  • Ability to work well with other staff and outside vendors

  • Ability to multi-task and approach work in a detailed manner

  • Ability to prioritize work in order to meet goals and deadlines

  • Ability to keep sensitive information confidential



  • CPA Preferred
  • Grant accounting and reporting experience.
  • Tax experience preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of Intacct,, ADP, and Nexonia.
