The League submitted comments to the Management and Budget Office (OMB) regarding its proposed updates to the federal government’s race and ethnicity data collection standards. The outcome of this comment opportunity will update the questions that respondents see on the US Census and other forms of government data collection. The League and its coalition partners support OMB’s proposed updates to add an option on federal surveys for respondents to select a Middle Eastern or North African identity if applicable and transition to a single-question format in place of the two questions requesting racial identity and Hispanic or Latino origin separately. The League urged that these updates would increase clarity for respondents and collect data that is more representative of the diverse identities held by people in the US. LWVUS also signed onto partner comments to amplify how the proposed changes would impact numerous racial and ethnic communities in the US, linked below.
