The League signed onto a letter calling on the US Senate to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which would ensure that all federal benefits are available to married couples no matter where they live and that states give full faith and credit to valid marriages.
We, the undersigned organizations and leaders, represent millions of families that need passage of the Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) as soon as possible.
The RMA is popular, bipartisan federal legislation that would protect marriages of same-sex and interracial couples. The measure passed the U.S. House of Representatives in July 2022 with support from 47 Republicans and every Democrat – and momentum is growing on both sides of the aisle for the Senate to act in the days ahead. This legislation would maintain the status quo and protect families by repealing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), ensuring that all federal benefits are available to married couples no matter where they live, and ensuring that states give full faith and credit to all validly celebrated marriages.
Marriage is about love, commitment, and family. People from all walks of life value the freedom to marry and believe all families should have certainty and the freedom to live without fear. In fact, support for marriage equality for same-sex couples is at 71 percent – an all-time high. This legislation is an important opportunity to reaffirm the freedom to marry and protect the millions of families nationwide who deserve to have their marriages protected and respected under the law.
Passing the Respect for Marriage Act is a vital step Congress can take to protect LGBTQ families, who deserve stability in their families and all areas of their daily life. We call on the Senate to act swiftly and pass the Respect for Marriage Act as soon as possible, and we pledge to work alongside members of the Senate to ensure that diverse LGBTQ people, particularly those who are most marginalized, are respected in all areas of daily life
Signed,
