Leagues File Amicus Brief in Indiana Voter ID Case
The League of Women Voters of Indiana, LWV of Indianapolis and the LWVUS filed a joint Amicus Brief in the Supreme Court case that will determine the constitutionality of an Indiana law that requires voters to present photo ID at polling places. The brief details experiences of a number of Indiana voters where votes were either not counted or the right to vote was denied entirely. The brief points out that while those burdened by the Voter ID Law may be in the minority that does not change the fact that each individual has a fundamental right to vote. Further, the law in question gives an astounding amount of discretion to polling officials who are political appointees, in that these appointees are able to challenge any voter without constitutionally required limitations or guidelines for the use of this power.
