The Freedom to Vote Powers Every Issue

Our right to vote is integral to protecting all of our other rights. We need Congress to take action to protect voting rights in order to ensure that access to the ballot box is free and equal. Only when every eligible voter has equal access to cast a ballot and all eligible votes are counted, will we have the power to make democratic decisions about our rights.

We need voting rights in order to make our voices heard on all important issues. Free and equal access to vote allows us to support candidates who are committed to taking action on issues like climate protections, gun safety regulations, racial justice, and reproductive freedom.

When polling locations are closed, mail-in ballots are restricted, unfair voter ID laws are put in place, or voters are unwittingly purged from voter rolls, eligible voters are prevented from casting a ballot to support the candidates who best represent them and their needs.

The graphic then asked "Congress, when will you protect us?" to connect to Congress's job to implement laws that protect voting rights and impact these issue.

As the midterm elections approach in November 2022, America is heading into yet another election where voters are not fully protected at the ballot box. Since the Supreme Court decision in 2013 on Shelby County v. Holder — which rolled back key provisions of the Voting Rights Act —  the voting rights of millions have been threatened. These attacks have become more prevalent in the last few years, especially since the historic turnout of the 2020 election.

Now is not the time to back down, but to surge forward. Federal voting rights protections cannot wait and are vital to saving the soul of our democracy. Join the League of Women Voters in calling on Congress to move legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect the freedom to vote.

Whenever we encourage people to call on Congress to take action, it is important to remember the residents of the District of Columbia, who do not have representation in Congress. The disenfranchisement of DC is also connected to voting rights!
