The League of Women Voters sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson urging him to swear in Congresswoman-elect Adelita Grijalva (AZ-7). Grijalva was elected to her seat on September 23, 2025.
October 10, 2025
Honorable Mike Johnson
Speaker of the House
U.S. House of Representatives
H-232, The Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Speaker Johnson,
The League of Women Voters has serious concerns about your refusal to swear in a duly elected member of Congress from Arizona’s 7th Congressional District. Adelita Grijalva was elected with a majority of votes on Tuesday, September 23, yet she still is waiting to be sworn into office over two weeks after the election concluded.
The League of Women Voters believes that Congress must be responsive to citizens, make decisions that reflect the will of the people, and prioritize a fully functioning democracy. As the Speaker of the House, it is your job to ensure that the business of the government continues moving forward in a manner that reflects what is best for the nation. By delaying the swearing in of Congresswoman-elect Grijalva, you are currently denying representation for over 800,000 Arizonans.
In 2025, there have been four special elections to replace members who have resigned or passed away. In all three previous special elections, the members elected across the country were sworn in the day after their election.[1] [2] Yet, the Congresswoman-elect and the people of Arizona’s 7th district have been waiting for over two weeks for you to administer the oath of office.
Your actions restrict the voices of your countrymen and women. It is time to install the newest member of the US House of Representatives. We urge you to make haste and swear in Adelita Grijalva as the newest member of the House of Representatives immediately.
Sincerely,
Celina Stewart, Esq.
