Black women have played pivotal roles in voter mobilization and voter turnout for years. More than two-thirds of Black women turned out to vote in the 2020 presidential election—the third highest rate of any race-gender group. Now, with another election just weeks away, Black women are urged to approach this non-presidential election with the same vigor of 2020.

The League of Women Voters of Houston, TX, went to the halls of HISD high schools this week to register students to vote.

Today, the League of Women Voters of Texas issued the following statement after a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas

The 2021 redistricting cycle was the first one without the full protection of the Voting Rights Act. Without federal oversight, many states and local municipalities have used this advantage to implement racially gerrymandered maps, i.e. district lines that limit the voting power of voters of color.

One Houston woman has made it her life's mission to fight for voting rights and she is currently the president of the local chapter of The League of Women Voters. “Voting rights is a passionate thing because I think every citizens’ voice should be heard," said Annie Johnson-Benifield.

With the new year comes more litigation.
