WASHINGTON, DC — With Election Day just two weeks away, the League of Women Voters is calling on Americans nationwide to recognize the everyday heroes working behind the scenes to ensure our elections are free, fair, and accessible. Today, on Election Hero Day, the League celebrates election officials, poll workers, and the myriad volunteers whose dedication makes our democracy possible.
At a time when election workers face growing political pressure, threats, and misinformation, their commitment to serving voters has never been more important. Across the country, these dedicated public servants are preparing polling places, processing ballots, answering voters' questions, and ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to make their voice heard on November 3.
As managing partner of Election Hero Day, the League is leading national efforts to recognize these individuals and rally communities around the people who make our elections work.
“Democracy doesn't run itself. It depends on everyday Americans who show up, serve their communities, and protect our freedom to vote, often in the face of intimidation and political pressure,” said Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters. “Election workers are our neighbors, friends, and community members who deserve our gratitude, respect, and support. As we approach one of the most consequential elections of our time, we must stand with the people who make our democracy possible.”
Throughout the country, the League's nearly 800 state and local Leagues work alongside election officials to provide trusted, nonpartisan voter information, support poll worker recruitment, and help communities prepare for elections. Through its partnership with Power the Polls, the League has helped recruit thousands of Americans to serve as poll workers, strengthening the workforce that keeps elections running smoothly.
This Election Hero Day, the League is encouraging Americans to turn appreciation into action by thanking local election workers, sharing messages of support, and considering serving as poll workers in future elections. Voters can also help by making a voting plan, understanding their state's election rules, and relying on trusted sources for accurate voting information.
Americans interested in becoming election heroes themselves can learn more about serving as poll workers through the League's partnership with Power the Polls at powerthepolls.org/lwv.
