League of Women Voters Statement on Maine SOS Decision

WASHINGTON; PORTLAND, ME — The League of Women Voters of the US and the League of Women Voters of Maine issued the following statement in response to the Maine Secretary of State’s decision declaring former President Trump ineligible to be listed as a candidate on the state’s 2024 presidential primary ballot:

“After Colorado, Maine has become the second state to make a decision declaring former President Trump ineligible to appear on their state’s the primary ballot for actions related to an insurrection. Other states are still deciding cases where his eligibility to appear on their primary ballot has been challenged, which means voters nationwide need clarity.

“The League supports election officials in their role as nonpartisan administrators of our democratic elections, and in Maine, this role includes weighing in on the question of ballot eligibility. As the highest election official in a state, the secretary of state’s duty to administer our elections safely, fairly, and securely is instrumental to our democracy. The Maine secretary of state’s decision is not the final word on this matter, and voters need clarity from the courts.

“The League of Women Voters recognizes that whether President Donald Trump is ineligible for the White House under the US Constitution is likely to be resolved by the US Supreme Court. We hope the Court will issue a swift and definitive decision that provides clarity for voters during the upcoming presidential primary election season.

“For more than a century, the League of Women Voters has worked to empower voters and to ensure everyone is fully represented in our democracy. We hope the Supreme Court will decide this matter once and for all so that voters receive the clarity they deserve to vote with confidence.”
