LWV Commends President Biden for Prioritizing Voting Rights in First Joint Address to Congress

Press Release / Last Updated:

WASHINGTON – Today the League of Women Voters of the United States CEO Virginia Kase issued the following statement in response to President Biden’s Joint Address to Congress:

“Last night President Biden made it clear to the American people: ‘we need to protect the sacred right to vote.’

“More voters than ever before participated in the 2020 election, in many ways because of expansions that made voting more accessible, including vote by mail. We want to see these permanent fixes to our voting system so that we are building upon the success of 2020 for future elections. Unfortunately, state legislatures have introduced hundreds of bills that would roll back voter access and create more barriers for voters.

“The For the People Act will ensure that we build on our progress of voter expansion—not take us backwards. We thank President Biden for calling on Congress to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and we echo that call.

“The For the People Act will also create a fair and transparent redistricting process nationwide that is more equitable, to ensure all voters’ voices are heard. This week we learned which states will gain and lose seats in Congress as a result of our nation’s changing population. That’s why it is more important than ever for communities around the country to be engaged in the redistricting process and ensure their state has fair and transparent maps.”

“The League calls on both houses of Congress to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and send them to President Biden so that the sacred right to vote is upheld for all Americans.”
