RICHMOND, VA — The League of Women Voters of South Hampton Roads, the League of Women Voters of Virginia, and the League of Women Voters of the United States issued the following statement on the mass shooting in a Walmart in Chesapeake, VA:
“Yesterday, the Chesapeake community was rocked by tragedy as a gunman opened fire on grocery shoppers at a local Walmart. We mourn the victims of this awful shooting. Our hearts are broken by this trauma inflicted on our friends and neighbors, days before the Thanksgiving holiday.
“This tragedy comes on the heels of a targeted mass shooting at an LGBTQIA+ nightclub in Colorado Springs and yet another mass shooting at the University of Virginia. Our national leaders must take action to protect our communities. We call on Congress to enact national gun violence prevention measures to keep us safe.”
