LWVPA Statement on Supreme Court Upholding New Maps

Press Release / Last Updated:

Harrisburg, PA - The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania president, Susan Carty, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court decision refusing to block the redrawing of Pennsylvania's congressional districts:

"This victory is for the voters. The League brought this lawsuit to ensure that Pennsylvanians’ votes were not diluted by the unconstitutional extreme partisan gerrymandering of our congressional districts and now, voters will be voting in new, fairer congressional districts in this upcoming election. Voters deserve the right for their voices to be heard regardless of party affiliation or address. This victory is an important first step toward slaying the gerrymander.

"With today’s decision, voters can focus on educating themselves on the candidates and issues on their ballot while making sure they are registered and plan to vote on May 15.

"We celebrate this success, but we know that it is not enough. Unless we can change how we draw both our legislative and congressional maps, we will be right back here in a few years.  That’s why we continue to fight alongside many organizations, policymakers and individuals from both sides of the aisle to pass legislation to implement an independent redistricting process."
